The Lord compares us to sheep as sheep need a Good Shepherd who is Jesus Christ. After the fall of man from the Garden of Eden animals took a predatory instinct as they had to prey for food and man kind became as like unto flesh as the grass withers away hence what a “dying” or “withering” away over a period of time.
